AntiGravity Yoga is turning the fitness world upside down. This revolutionary new exercise technique was crated by Broadway aerial choreographer, former world-class gymnastics specialist and elite coach Christopher Harrison, whose acclaimed aerial performance troupe AntiGravity® is now celebrating its 20th year. This AFAA and ACE certified workout has introduced a wholly new genre called suspension fitness. Merging entertainment and exercise, Antigravity® Yoga is now an international phenomenon. In three short years, the technique has expanded from NYC across the globe including: the UK, Ireland, Italy, Brazil, Spain, Switzerland, Mexico, South Korea, Canada, Cayman Islands, Russia, Australia, Germany and more. AntiGravity®'s newest partner is Madonna- she has chosen the AG®Y technique as part of her new gym chain, Hard Candy Fitness, and the program is fully installed and up and running at the first location in Moscow.
AntiGravity Yoga combines traditional yoga poses and principles with elements from aerial arts, dance, gymnastics, Pilates, and calisthenics. With this technique one can obtain all of the benefits of yoga without the impact or strain required to achieve the same movements and positions on the ground. Using the principles of gravity to achieve physical and mental decompression, it allows practitioners to get in shape and realign their body in a playful environment. The philosophy of AntiGravity® Yoga takes into consideration the two meanings of the word anti-gravity. The first is to "defy the laws of physics" and, secondly, to take a stance "against graveness", assuring that classes are fun!
AntiGravity® Yoga utilizes a silk hammock apparatus invented my Mr. Harrison called the AntiGravity® Hammock. It is a structural fabric which acts like a swing or soft trapeze, rated to safely hold over 2000 pounds. It can be connected either from two overhead points, or to a free standing structure, which is currently in development. The performers in Team AntiGravity® work in the AntiGravity® Hammock from 20 feet off the ground. Harrison lowered it to waist height to make it accessible to all and discovered that by distributing one's weight between the hammock and the floor, a myriad of unique exercises were possible.
In a typical class, instructors guide students through basic progressions that lead to spinal decompression release. Classes on the AntiGravity® Hammock are appropriate for those of all ages and fitness levels and include low impact cardio, strength and flexibility training, balance and agility exercises, and inversions.
AntiGravity® Yoga is anti aging. AntiGravity® denotes fighting against the aging affects of gravity. As the body ages, the joints need to be pushed to maintain mobility. The muscles need to be worked to maintain proper alignment and the discs need to be hydrated to minimize deterioration. Antigravity® Yoga does all this.
Mr. Harrison created the AntiGravity® Hammock and aerial hammock performance technique for his elite team of acrobatic performers, for the sake of creatively exploring the air. "Necessity is the mother of invention and acrobats with competitive backgrounds have many injuries that require a resourceful choreographer. I took myself and my team of tumblers up into the air to save our joints and discovered the amazing effects of decompression and inversions. Our performers also found the working with this apparatus gave them a great core and upper-body workout, completely sculpting their abs. We also found that there were other hidden benefits from hanging upside down. We would relax inverted in-between sets and discovered it would revitalize our entire body and release the kinks in our muscles. the technique of working on fabric as a performance apparatus is fairly new in the aerial arts," says Harrison.
"The AntiGravity® performance company was the first company to use the apparatus looped as a hammock or setting rather than in a strand-like rope. Cirque du Soleil has borrowed our performers and the technique for their show. AntiGravity Yoga emerged naturally from our work, originally as a company warm-up. By combining this new aerial art form with knowledge from my yoga practice (of 15 years) I was able to cater to the everyday person."
Aside from the many benefits of exercise inherent in an AntiGravity® Yoga session, the most unique benefit is that it allows participants to perform Zero Compression Inversions™.
